John offers private instruction in piano, songwriting/composition, music theory, and improvisation. He teaches classes in music theory and appreciation, pop music, chamber music, and sound recording. He offers preparation in Certificate of Merit exams, ABRSM exams, Music Development Program exams, and AP Theory exams.
John brings a relaxed yet highly structured approach to teaching. His primary goals are to inspire creativity and musical excellence, and to make each lesson a joyful opportunity for success. His studio is often full and a waiting list is common.
John Syzygy is a founder and Co-Owner of Play Music Studios in Cupertino, CA. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Music Teachers Association of California, Santa Clara County Branch. He is a member of MTAC, ASCAP, Society of Composers, Inc., MTNA, and the National Piano Guild.
John Syzygy received his B.M. and M.A. in Composition from San Jose State University, where he was a two-time winner of the Eva Thompson Phillips Award for Composition. He has won numerous awards for his solo and small ensemble works, most recently winning 1st Prize in the MTAC Composers Today Contest (2011), and his electro-acoustic music has been featured at the International Computer Music Conference (2004). He has studied piano with Dr. Gwendolyn Mok, Debbie Poryes, Marc Steiner, Judith Meites, and Aida Chanco. His primary composition instructors include Dr. Pablo Furman, Dr. Brian Belet, and Dr. Daniel Wyman.
