Kiyoe customizes her teaching method to individual needs, from voice technique to jazz fundamentals and improvisation, all in the context of jazz repertoire study and development. She also focuses on rhythmic concepts in jazz and Brazilian music by using percussion or vocal exercises so that students can grasp the concepts in a fun way. Kiyoe’s teaching of improvisation focuses on the utilization of rhythmic concepts, along with the understanding of and appropriate use of scales, and call and response exercises to develop the ear.
For piano students, she teaches fundamental piano for children to adults along with basic music theory. For those who wants to learn jazz & brazilian music, she will provide customized music to meet individual level and needs. The goal is to enjoy music and and understand how it works.
Kiyoe has performed at various venues from local jazz clubs to jazz festivals throughout California and Japan. She has also sung in premier vocal jazz ensembles, including Vocal Flight and Synchronicity, which won a Downbeat magazine award for outstanding collegiate vocal group, took 1st place at the Reno Jazz Festival national competition, and 2nd place in the Monterey Next Generation competition.
